The Visual Arts Department: The Buller High School Visual Arts Department recognises the study of Art as an integral part of our lives. Art is a potent and dynamic visual language through which we are able to communicate personal experiences, ideas, cultural values and beliefs. In both the process of making and examining art, students can realise the power to inspire change through imagination, creativity and innovation.
The Visual Arts Department encompasses the learning area of The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum. It promotes and supports student learning by presenting programmes, experiences and opportunities that encourage independent learning, challenge students to achieve personal standards of excellence and reach their full potential. The Visual Arts Department achieves this through following the vision of the New Zealand Curriculum by teaching our students to become confident, connected, actively involved and lifelong learners.
About the Visual Arts Department: Each course is taught by a specialist teacher who is passionate about their subject area. The standard of work is high with almost half of all students gaining a Merit or Excellence Endorsed Certificate in Visual Arts at Levels 1,2 & 3. The Department has students every year get accepted into Art and Design Universities/Colleges all around the country. Students are invited to exhibit their work in community exhibitions, displays and the Annual ‘Art in the Park’ held in Shanty Town. At the conclusion of the senior year students’ works are put up on display for all of the school to view. This is a showcase that inspires all students to pursue Art and is a testament to the talent of our students and the dedication of the staff.
