Buller High School is a friendly, helpful and caring School, and doing things the Buller High School Way will help us to keep it that way. Pupils and Teachers at Buller High School use Courtesy, Consideration and Common Sense to guide them.

The Buller High School Way is a code of conduct that has been developed to help maintain a safe and secure learning environment for all pupils.

We seek to eliminate inappropriate behaviours by recognising the needs of both pupils and teachers in a way that emphasises courtesy and common sense.

 

Classroom Rules

  1. The Teacher is in charge – follow instructions
  2. Students will help make the lesson effective by:
  • arriving on time
  • bringing all equipment needed
  • talking only when permitted – no calling out
  • staying seated unless requested to move
  • no eating or chewing
  • no put-downs or offensive language
  • no interfering with others and their property
  • no use of cellphones
  • other personal technology may be used with the teacher's permission

 

Consequences for making good choices

Those who choose to learn and strive to reach their full potential can earn points and rewards for making positive choices eg:

  • Positive letter home
  • Personal Merit points
  • House points
  • Rewards
  • End of Year Prize giving Awards
  • Principal’s Award - premier in-school award which recognises exceptional academic, sporting, cultural or personal achievement.

Consequences for making poor choices

  • The teacher may ask a student to identify the rule that has been broken.
  • The teacher will provide the student with an opportunity to make a different choice. If the issue is resolved at this point, no demerit points will be incurred.
  • If the unacceptable behaviour continues, the teacher will use one of a range of teacher options in order to encourage a change in behaviour.
  • If no satisfactory resolution to the inappropriate behaviour continues, the teacher may refer a student to ‘time-out’. This referral may earn demerit points.
  • Failure to follow the Buller High School Way will eventually result in a referral to the HOD (classroom behaviour) or Dean. This referral will earn demerit points.
  • Continual disobedience may result in a referral to a Deputy/Assistant Principal or the Principal. Such action could lead to a stand-down or suspension.
