Transition and Life Skills Courses

The Transition to Work programme is designed to help pupils prepare for the world of work and life after Buller High School. It consists of classroom programmes that combine elements of Life Skills and Work Skills. Opportunities are given for work experience in local businesses and community organisations. Extra help is given for pupils at risk of leaving School without any formal qualifications. These classes are offered at the Year 11, 12 and 13 levels. Special work experience programmes are available through the Careers Counsellor.

Polytechnic, University and Correspondence Courses

For pupils in Years 10, 11 and above who have specialised study preferences (in subjects not available at School), vocational correspondence courses are available from The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand (TOPNZ) in Lower Hutt. The range of subjects includes Childcare, Retailing, Tourism, Work and Employment Skills, Construction, Carpentry (one place), Agriculture, Landscaping and Automotive.

Correspondence courses are also available from the Correspondence School and the Universities.

A high degree of self-motivation is required to study these courses, as they are tertiary level programmes. Unit Standards, which lead to industry qualifications, can be gained in these courses. Generally, one of the above subjects would take the place of one subject in a line on the pupil’s timetable.
