Year 9 and 10
All students follow a compulsory "core" consisting of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Technology and The Arts. There will also be some electives (ie choices), giving students a ‘taste’ of the range of other curriculum courses that BHS provides.
Year 11
National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 1)
Students study English and Mathematics and Science plus three other optional subjects. Most subjects are assessed via approximately 5 to 7 separate topics called Achievement standards. Some are assessed in examinations held in November, and others are assessed through work completed during the year. Students are graded Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit or Excellence to each Achievement Standard.
Year 12
National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 2)
All students do English and choose four or five other subjects.
Most subjects are assessed against Achievement Standards or Unit Standards with a combination of internal assessment and external assessment (exams).
Year 13 (Pre University)
National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 3).
Students choose five from 19 possible subjects.
Many Year 13 subjects need to have been studied at Year 12; e.g. most languages and the sciences.
Scholarship is also offered at Year 13. This is a higher-level qualification with a separate examination.
Qualification Fees for 2010
The following schedule of fees for secondary school students engaged in assessment on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) apply in 2010. It is anticiapted that these will remain the same for 2011.
| Entry | Fees |
| Entry for all NQF standards and up to 3 scholarship subjects | $75 |
| Additional Scholarship entries | $75 per subject |
Some pupils require extra assistance with "the basics". Assistance is available to assess the special needs of these pupils, to help their teachers develop individual programmes and, in some cases, provide individual tuition, especially in Reading. Special programmes are available for pupils who are having difficulties with reading. Assistance is given within the various Departments of the School for extra help where necessary. Provision is also made for those who wish to be extended.
Classroom texts (in the form of books, photocopied extracts or specially prepared course notes) are supplied for each subject and are on loan for the year. Each pupil is responsible for the safekeeping of these text materials and will be charged for any damage (or loss) that is considered to be beyond normal wear and tear. Teachers will advise pupils of all necessary stationery and classroom equipment and these should be purchased from stationery shops in town.
Pupils are expected to do some work at home to reinforce and extend their learning.
For junior pupils, homework can be an extension of class work, a time to finish exercises begun in class, a time for project or assignment work, or to learn work covered during school hours. It is important that juniors have a regular time and place for homework in order to develop good study habits early in their secondary school career.
The School provides Homework Diaries and these should be used by pupils to record details of homework set. Senior pupils should be devoting much of their homework time to revision and study, as well as for assignments and completion of exercises begun in class. Seniors should ensure that they begin their revision programmes early in the year, as regular, organised study is necessary for examination preparation.
It is expected that pupils in Year 9 and 10 will spend from one to one and a half hours per day on homework. Pupils in Year 11 to 13 should spend from two to three hours per day on homework. It must be emphasised that these times are guides only and parents/caregivers should contact the School if too much homework or a lack of it becomes a problem.
Reports are issued at regular intervals throughout the year to allow parents/caregivers to check on the progress of their children. All year groups will receive a preliminary report after approximately two months of the year and full reports at half year and end of year.
