What English is all about? Students should be able to:
Engage with and enjoy language in all its varieties
Understand, respond to, and use oral, written, and visual language effectively in different situations.
English at Buller High School follows the requirements of the New Zealand English Curriculum and builds on the language work from primary school.
It includes: Reading (novels, short stories, plays, poetry, and non fiction) Writing (formal, creative, and personal) Listening (speeches, plays, radio programmes, videos, and audio tapes) Speaking (speeches, debates, plays, and role plays) Viewing (visual work, films, and plays) Presenting (written work, oral work, and static images)
All English courses emphasise thinking critically, exploring language and processing information. There are other activities such as drama, debating, and speech and writing competitions which students can become involved in.
